Signs birds have moved in under your panels

The gap between solar panels and the roof is sheltered, warm and out of reach of predators, which makes it ideal for pigeons. Once one pair settles in, others tend to follow.

Cooing and scratching

Noise above bedrooms early in the morning, often the first thing people notice.

Twigs and debris in gutters

Nesting material falling from the roof edge or blocking gutters and downpipes.

Droppings on panels and paths

Mess on the panels, windows, cars and patio below. Droppings are acidic and hard to shift.

Birds flying in and out

Pigeons disappearing under the edge of the array or perching on the frame.

Panels producing less

Fouled panels generate less electricity, and nests can damage cabling underneath.

New panels, no birds yet

Proofing a new installation early is usually cheaper than clearing nests later.

What solar panel bird proofing involves

The aim is simple: close the gap between your panels and the roof so birds can't get underneath, without damaging the panels or affecting how they work.

  • Clearing out any existing nests, droppings and debris from under the array, once it's lawful to do so.
  • Fitting a mesh skirt around the edge of the panels. Specialist clips hold it to the panel frame, so there's no drilling into the panels themselves.
  • Optional extras such as panel cleaning, or spikes on nearby ridges and ledges where birds perch.

For a typical home the job usually takes a few hours, and access is normally by ladder, roof ladder or a powered access platform depending on height.

Common questions

Will bird proofing void my solar panel warranty?

Mesh systems designed for solar panels attach with clips rather than by drilling into the panels or frames, so when they're fitted correctly they shouldn't affect your warranty. If you're unsure, check your warranty terms or ask the specialist which fixing method they use.

Can it be fitted to panels I already have?

Yes. Most bird proofing for solar panels is designed to be retrofitted to existing roof-mounted arrays.

Does it harm the birds?

No. Proofing works by blocking access to the gap under the panels, not by harming birds. Wild birds and their active nests are protected by law, so reputable specialists plan the work around any nesting activity.

Does PanelShield do the work?

No. PanelShield is a free introduction service. We pass your enquiry to one independent bird proofing specialist covering your area, who quotes you and carries out the work directly.

Does it cost anything to use PanelShield?

No. Requesting a quote is free and you're under no obligation to go ahead.

How quickly will I hear back?

Usually within one working day. If you selected "as soon as possible", we'll flag that to the specialist.
