Solar panel bird proofing cost in the UK
For a typical house with a standard roof-mounted system, professional bird proofing usually costs between £300 and £800. Here's what decides where your job lands in that range, and how to make sure you get a fair price.
Typical prices
These are rough guide prices for professionally fitted mesh proofing on a home. Every roof is different, so treat them as a starting point rather than a quote.
| System size | Typical price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Small (up to 8 panels) | £300 to £450 | Often a single row on one roof slope |
| Medium (9 to 16 panels) | £400 to £650 | The most common size for UK homes |
| Large (17 panels or more) | £600 to £800+ | More perimeter to mesh, may cover several slopes |
If nests have been there for a while, expect the clean-out to add to the price. Commercial roofs are priced individually.
What affects the cost
Number of panels and the layout
Mesh is fitted around the outside edge of the array, so the price follows the length of that edge more than the panel count itself. A neat rectangular block is quicker to proof than panels split across several roof slopes.
Roof height and access
A bungalow can often be done from a ladder. Two and three-storey homes may need a roof ladder or a powered access platform, and platform hire is one of the biggest variables in the final price.
Whether birds are already nesting
Proofing a clean array is quick. If pigeons have been nesting for months, the specialist will need to remove nests, droppings and debris first, and may recommend cleaning the panels too. Active nests are protected by law, which can also affect timing. Our guide to pigeons under solar panels explains the signs and risks.
Type of proofing
Most specialists recommend a galvanised or stainless steel mesh skirt held on with clips. See our bird proofing mesh guide for materials and clips. Cheaper options exist, but plastic mesh and adhesive fixings tend to degrade in UV and come loose sooner.
Proofing early is usually cheaper. Fitting mesh to new or bird-free panels avoids the clean-out cost entirely, and stops damage to cabling before it starts.
Mesh vs spikes vs DIY
| Option | Good for | Drawbacks |
|---|---|---|
| Steel mesh skirt | Blocking the gap under panels completely | Needs safe roof access to fit properly |
| Spikes | Stopping birds perching on ridges and ledges nearby | Don't stop birds getting under the panels on their own |
| DIY kit | Single-storey roofs and confident DIYers | Working at height is risky, and poor fitting can leave gaps or affect warranties |
Will it affect my warranty?
Mesh systems made for solar panels clip onto the panel frame rather than being drilled or screwed into it, so fitted correctly they shouldn't affect your warranty. Ask your specialist which clips they use, and check your installer's warranty terms if you're unsure.
How to get a fair quote
- Ask what mesh material and clips they use, and whether nest removal and cleaning are included.
- Check how they'll access the roof and whether platform hire is in the price.
- Ask about any guarantee on the work, and what happens if birds find a way back in.
- Get the price in writing before work starts.
